Bizweni Centre for Children with Disabilities is an NPO special care centre in Somerset West for children with severe to profound physical and intellectual impairments.

Core Criteria

• Appropriately qualified: B or BSc in Occupational Therapy
• Registered with the HPCSA
• Minimum 1-2 years’ experience as an OT (comserve included)
• Fluent in English. Afrikaans and isiXhosa are an added advantage Excellent computer literacy skills
• Able to be flexible and be an all-rounder
  
  

Secondary Criteria

• Interest in early childhood development and children with severe disabilities
• Trained in wheelchair seating
• Leadership experience
•  Experience/knowledge of treatment applicable to cerebral palsy, down syndrome, autism spectrum disorder and intellectual disability
•  Experience in creating therapy and stimulation programmes
• Experience in providing training and mentorship to caregivers and colleagues
• Experience in working as part of a multi-disciplinary team
• Valid driver’s license and own transport
  
  

The successful therapist would need to independently:

• Fulfil duties of class coordinator for a class of ±20 beneficiaries aged 2-10 years old
• Develop a developmental stimulation programme for the class
• Assess and report on beneficiaries’ functional abilities and therapy needs
• Develop individual goals and therapy plans
• Supervise, mentor and train class and Therapy Support staff – the candidate should have a strong mentoring ability
• Adapt complex wheelchairs according to users’ needs
• Write reports for and make referrals to appropriate stakeholders
• Implement required government programming
• Attend relevant training courses, workshops and meetings
• Conduct staff development, in-service and caregiver training workshops
• Practice excellent case management skills Assist with extra Centre-related duties
