
Bizweni Centre for Children with Disabilities is an NPO special care centre in Somerset West for children with severe to profound physical and intellectual impairments.
Core Criteria
- Appropriately qualified: B or BSc in Occupational Therapy
- Registered with the HPCSA
- Minimum 1-2 years’ experience as an OT (comserve included)
- Fluent in English. Afrikaans and isiXhosa are an added advantage Excellent computer literacy skills
- Able to be flexible and be an all-rounder
Secondary Criteria
- Interest in early childhood development and children with severe disabilities
- Trained in wheelchair seating
- Leadership experience
- Experience/knowledge of treatment applicable to cerebral palsy, down syndrome, autism spectrum disorder and intellectual disability
- Experience in creating therapy and stimulation programmes
- Experience in providing training and mentorship to caregivers and colleagues
- Experience in working as part of a multi-disciplinary team
- Valid driver’s license and own transport
The successful therapist would need to independently:
- Fulfil duties of class coordinator for a class of ±20 beneficiaries aged 2-10 years old
- Develop a developmental stimulation programme for the class
- Assess and report on beneficiaries’ functional abilities and therapy needs
- Develop individual goals and therapy plans
- Supervise, mentor and train class and Therapy Support staff – the candidate should have a strong mentoring ability
- Adapt complex wheelchairs according to users’ needs
- Write reports for and make referrals to appropriate stakeholders
- Implement required government programming
- Attend relevant training courses, workshops and meetings
- Conduct staff development, in-service and caregiver training workshops
- Practice excellent case management skills Assist with extra Centre-related duties
